The Celts occupied much of temperate Europe during the last 1000 years BC.  Early Celtic chiefs grew wealthy by trading with the Mediterranean world; they constructed hilltop strongholds with lavish graves nearby.  Later Celtic settlements, known as oppida, formed the earliest towns away from the Mediterranean.  The Celts used iron for tools and made elaborate bronze ornaments.
